Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for suspected drunken driving April 12 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
Kona officers arrested 11 drivers while South Hilo officers arrested nine and Puna officers six, according to data released Tuesday by the Hawaii Police Department. South Kohala officers arrested four motorists and North Kohala officers one.
So far this year, there have been 384 DUI arrests compared with 281 during the same period last year, according to police.
There have been 237 major accidents so far this year compared with 262 during the same period last year.
As of Tuesday, eight fatalities have been recorded on the Big Island’s public roadways this year, police said. By this time in 2020, eight people had also died.
